Geologists hike miles to the new ocean entry, where breakouts are scarce but rain is abundant. Hiking back, beautiful pahoehoe flows are encountered, complete with a rainbow. The Lava Viewing Area is open 5 - 8 pm daily.

Please remain within the boundaries of the safe official viewing area. Civil Defense, advised by HVO scientists, determines which locations are best for visitors to see lava flows near Kalapana. Geologists with special access permits are allowed to hike where visitors are not able to go. Officers patrol the area to ensure the hours of 5 8 pm are honored.
